Makes My Blood Dance

Makes My Blood Dance can’t stop attracting buzz in 2020. Whether it be the hangover from their debut single, “Beaming Right Up,” or discussions about their aesthetically progressive bend to “Power of the Lightside” and the 2019 cut “Sick as our Secrets,” their small but growing discography has been getting the kind of attention a lot of indie catalogues just can’t attain, and in this sprit Makes My Blood Dance aren’t about to let their newfound platform go to waste. Their latest single and video, “Communion,” is already stirring up some new interest based on its radio-ready stylization which, to me, makes it the most well-rounded song they’ve made thus far.

The riff that we’re greeted with here isn’t as essential to appreciating the narrative as the angst within the lead vocal is, and when isolating the different elements away from each other in this mix, it’s obvious that the guitar is practically what makes the verse feel as tangible and brawny as it does.

This isn’t a knock on the singer at all, but instead a major point of interest in the band’s collective chemistry. Interdependence isn’t always a good thing in friendships or romantic relationships, but in a rock or metal band, it’s what turns simple groups into legends. “Communion” features a music video that feels like a direct homage to pretty much everything missing from pop culture in 2020, starting with the vitality you can only get from going to a live concert. I don’t know whether or not they drew up the concept for the video before the advent of quarantine culture or not, but in either case it amounts to an exceptionally relevant piece if you take it as being a bit commentarial as well as self-aware. Rock bands are hurting especially bad this winter, and to some degree this piece feels like an acknowledgement of that pain.

I really love what this group has been doing in 2019 and 2020, and if 2021 is a continuation of the magic they started conjuring up on a fairly regular basis last year, “Communion” won’t be the last song they release worth writing a review of. Makes My Blood Dance are a beat-centric group of rockers who could care less about the standards of some other, commercially-driven crew - they’re too busying relishing in the rhythm and rambunctious overdrive of a heavier sound than the mainstream can handle, and they’ve got my respect for it without question.
